Has anyone seen my marbles? by phoebe-johnson Has anyone seen my marbles? by phoebe-johnson
Now I'm back to school, Year 11, and this little number is a product of my first art assignment of the year. The theme was 'Loss' and you could interpret it in any way. I went with a more humourous path, rather than a completely angsty path, but I think there's a mix of joy and sadness in there. Like life, I guess.

Done with prismacolors, A4 size, no single reference (just a bunch of old man faces).

I know there is something wrong with the hands but I couldn't do much, having to squish them into the page at weird at impossible angles.
Oh well. Many people have said that they work with the image, so thank you!

I think I will be using a similar theme of dementia and memory loss for my Yr 12 Body of Work.
We'll see.

This is amazing. The colors and the textures are rich and eye-catching. While overall a sad picture, there is just enough of a whimsical element to make me smile. Excellent!

Oh, and considering how age can affect bones and joints, I don't find the hands to be awkward at all. It adds another layer to the image and what this man is going through.

It's perfect. Don't we all have days where the World seems too big and crowding in on us. You really do feel like you are losing your "marbles."
My mom used to say, "I'd lose my head if it wasn't screwed on right." =P

I actually think the angles of the hands speak very well for this work. You may not have been going for anything realistic (I say that because of the most drawing aspect of this piece happens to be marbles spilling out of a man's head) but depending on what form of dementia he suffers from, it is possible that he would hold his hands in "weird and impossible angles." I actually found his position benefits your picture, almost making you pity the (hopefully fictional) subject.

Ah, thank you! I am really glad to hear your thoughts on the hand angles. He is sort of a fictional character, though "inspired" by my nana who does suffer from dementia. Thanks again.

Ohh, right, yes it was, but it was just in high school visual art, which was hardly being 'taught', haha, it was more like just being given assignments. I haven't studied art properly, at uni or anything, though I'd love to one day.

Behold kiddies; that's what age does to people. It'll turn your brains into marbles if you're lucky; dried dirt if you're not.

At least it evokes something! That's the aim. That's what dementia/Alzheimers is like, in a way. Humourous at times but overall pretty upsetting... thanks for the comment.

Yes, it's very depicting and emotive. But that's what most old people suffer from. Nice work though, no doubts about it.

I just realized the right hand position. I'm sure this was intentional. That position is anatomically impossible, especially for a older gentleman, but that's what i like about it, it adds that surreal "twist" (pun intended) to it haha. Really good concept, very imaginative.

Haha I know, it's anatomically impossible for even I to do it, I can't imagine contorting into that position with arthritic wrists :P Thank you!

When I realized you meant 11th Grade, I was slightly less impressed than when I thought you meant you were 11 years old. But this is STILL very impressive for an almost senior ;D Actually, it's very good. My friends are older than you are, and they can't draw HALF as good as this. So you have a pretty good understand of anatomy and ruffles of clothes. Not only that, but your very imaginative. "Lost my marbles" You're clever.

He's looking for his marbles but they are in his head. Nice interpretation of the metaphor.

Very good still. Not the best in the entire universe, but probably the best artist I have seen. It's so hard to point out what's wrong with your art. and since, I can not find a flaw, then you are up there with other great artists.

AT LEAST, all of the great artists who are not the gods of art. But still VERY great. Also, other artist, (not as great as you)make where they fail more apparent. SO even if you are not the "God" of art. . . You're still talented. Just remember that. At least know how great you are. WHICH, by the way, is MUCHO!

Wow, this is so imaginative! (Reminds me of the crazy juvenile fiction I read as a kid.) The texture and shading are so realistic--you even put the veins in the guy's hand!

And good for you going with the less angsty option. Angsty art is good, but the art world needs more humor.

Thank you so much! I agree. I do make angsty art sometimes, but the art world definitely needs to celebrate positive things more often! :P
